I am writing to object vigorously to the proposed building of homes in the Dinas Powys area and specifically at this time the Eastbrook proposed development of 250 homes
I have live in Dinas Powys for nearly 40 and never have I felt so vulnerable and trapped and my life is dictated by such things as being able to access a doctor, being able to just "pop" to the shops and the constant noise and pollution from the traffic that goes through our village. Even just walking along the main Cardiff Road you feel like you take your life in your hands. I herewith list my objections.
1. The current infrastructure, is at breaking point and any further additional strain on these systems will see more and more recurrences of the flooding incident in 2020. The river did overflow in 2020, but most of the house on the Southra Park estate were flooded by blocked and overflowing drains. more recently the serious water pipe burst and its repercussions on other pipes in the system only goes to show how vulnerable the systems are to change. Until the whole network of utilities has been upgraded and flood defences have been implemented, anymore additional strain being put on these will result in catastrophic failures and more flooding.
2. Flood Risk Although according to presentations there would be flood alleviating systems would be put in place for these homes. all water flows downhill and with more and more hard surfaces, it flow faster and faster, this does not allow the time for the water to slowly soak away. I could go on there are many issues with the flooding risk to the rest of the village if these homes are built
3. .Travel Dinas Powys is already grid locked at certain times of the day and 250 home equal 500 cars it makes no odds that active travel is encouraged, because if you need to get somewhere you will take the quickest and most convenient way of getting there. how many families will collect their children after a day at school and make them walk to the relevant rail/bus stop to get to an after school activity in a place where generally there is no public transport. Drop one child off and then go deliver another, come back to collect etc. public transport doesn't fit with peoples busy lives these days and until it does everyone will still use their cars. the local roads are too dangerous to cycle on. There is no disabled access to Eastbrook Station and the Steps at Dinas Powys station are lethal. The trains at commuting times are packed already. and buses take forever to get anywhere and don't generally go where you want them to. Emergency services are currently impeded by the current traffic levels, more traffic from more homes will exacerbate this and lives will be at stake.
4. Junction The junction at the Merry Harriers is a log jam and backs up regularly. add another junction into the the scenario and there will be tail backs for who knows how far. Cars from Cardiff entering the new estate will need to turn right across the traffic, how will this not impact on traffic flow. I suggest monitoring of the road particularly at school end of day with all the children from Ysgol Y Deri dispersing in their transport who do not live locally, plus local school traffic.
5. Doctors and Schools all these sorts of services are at critical mass and any more pressure on our services will mean current residents who still are unable to access particularly healthcare, and our service providers will become ill because of the pressures these expectations put on them and the services will fail completely.
6. Green Spaces as we all found out during the Covid epidemic Green space and the natural environment is important to our well being and with global warming this natural environment is becoming more and more critical in our world. We can no longer destroy wildlife natural habitats, without global consequences! never mind locally
7.community and Village Identity Engaging as a community and belonging is part and parcel of being human, over development will risk loosing the important village community and identity.
These objections are just the tip of the iceberg. there are many more implications if new homes are built anywhere without a sustainable infrastructure in place first.
