I object to the proposed development of 250 homes in Dinas Powys, citing its unsuitability for the village size. I believe it will strain local services such as healthcare and schools, worsen traffic congestion and safety, and increase flooding risks due to environmental impact. The development threatens to erode the village’s character by overextending its scale and infrastructure. I urge the Council to reject this proposal, emphasising the need for sustainable, proportionate planning that respects the existing community and environment. I request confirmation of receipt and recording of this objection.
I am writing to formally object to the proposed development of 250 new homes in Dinas Powys. While I understand the need for housing, this particular proposal is wholly unsuitable for a village of this size and will have significant negative consequences for existing residents, local infrastructure, and the environment.
1. Pressure on Local Services
Dinas Powys already struggles with limited service provision. GP surgeries have long waiting lists, and local schools are at or near capacity. Adding hundreds of new residents—potentially 250+ children—will place unsustainable pressure on services that are already overstretched. There is no clear plan for how these essential services will be expanded to meet increased demand.
2. Traffic and Road Safety
Traffic congestion in and around Dinas Powys is already severe, particularly during peak times for those commuting into Cardiff. The roads are frequently congested, and not designed to absorb the volume of vehicles that an additional 250 homes would generate. Assuming even a conservative estimate of two cars per household, this development could introduce 500 additional vehicles to an already overburdened road network. This will worsen journey times, increase pollution, and raise safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.
3. Environmental and Flooding Risks
The environmental impact of this development is deeply concerning. The proposed site will significantly increase surface water runoff, with nowhere appropriate for this water to drain. Dinas Powys has already experienced flooding in recent years, and further development on this scale will heighten that risk. Replacing green space with hard surfaces will exacerbate water management issues and undermine the natural landscape that characterises the village.
4. Loss of Village Character
Dinas Powys is valued for its village identity, community feel, and scale. A development of this magnitude would fundamentally alter the character of the area, turning a small village into an overdeveloped suburb. The proposal does not respect the unique qualities that make Dinas Powys a desirable and distinctive place to live.
For these reasons—insufficient service provision, increased traffic and road strain, environmental risks, and the erosion of the village’s character—I strongly urge the Council to reject this proposal. Sustainable development must be proportionate, carefully planned, and respectful of existing communities. This proposal fails to meet those standards.
