I am writing to formally object to the proposed housing development in Dinas Powys, particularly the plan to construct approximately 250 new homes on the fields adjacent to Cardiff Road (Eastbrook).
While I fully recognise the need for additional housing, the chosen location is wholly unsuitable for a development of this scale. There are several significant concerns that I believe have not been adequately addressed:
1. Severe existing traffic congestion
Cardiff Road and the surrounding routes are already heavily congested, especially during peak hours. Introducing a major housing development with its primary access point on Cardiff Road would create further gridlock and pose safety risks for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The area simply cannot absorb the additional traffic volume without causing daily disruption.
2. Floodplain concerns
The fields identified for development are known floodplains. Building on land that naturally absorbs excess water increases the risk of flooding both on-site and in surrounding residential areas. This raises serious questions about long-term sustainability, environmental impact, and the safety of future residents.
3. Overstretched local services
Local amenities-including the GP surgery, schools, and other essential services-are already operating at full capacity. Adding hundreds of new households without substantial investment in infrastructure will place an unsustainable burden on services that are already struggling to meet current demand.
4. Availability of alternative sites
Given the scale of the proposed development, it is reasonable to expect that alternative, more suitable sites exist within the wider area. A location that does not sit on a floodplain, does not feed directly into an already congested road network, and can be supported by local services should be prioritised.
For these reasons, I strongly oppose the current proposal. I urge the planning authority to reconsider the suitability of this site and to explore alternative locations that would better support both existing residents and future housing needs. Thank you for considering my objections.
