I object to the proposed development of 250 homes on Cardiff Road, Dinas Powys. I am concerned about increased flood risk and drainage issues due to the loss of permeable agricultural land. The additional homes would worsen surface water runoff and flooding without clear and proven mitigation. Traffic congestion on Cardiff Road would increase, raising safety and pollution concerns. The site supports local wildlife, including bats and birds, and development would harm biodiversity which would be contrary to environmental and sustainability priorities. Local services are already stretched; additional demand could overwhelm healthcare and educational facilities. It is unclear how these services would be expanded to accommodate the increase in population. I urge rejection of this proposal.
I strongly urge the planning authority to reject this proposal.
Q1: I am writing to formally object to the proposed development of 250 dwellings on Cardiff Road, Dinas Powys. My objection is based on the following concerns:
Flood Risk and Drainage There is already increasing concern locally regarding surface water and flooding in the area. Residents have seen conditions worsen in recent years, which suggests that drainage systems and the local water table are already under pressure.
The proposed development would replace permeable agricultural land with roads, driveways and housing. This would inevitably increase surface water runoff. Without clear and proven mitigation, this development risks making existing flooding issues worse for current residents.
Traffic Congestion and Highway Safety Cardiff Road is already heavily congested, particularly during peak times. Traffic frequently slows to a standstill as vehicles pass through Dinas Powys. The current volume of traffic is already excessive.
An additional 250 homes would result in a significant increase in vehicle movements. This would worsen congestion, increase pollution and raise safety concerns for pedestrians, especially children. The cumulative impact on road safety and quality of life should be carefully considered.
Impact on Wildlife and Biodiversity The proposed site supports established wildlife habitats. There are bats in the fields near Seel Park, along with a range of bird species, including birds of prey.
The loss of farmland and green space would reduce local biodiversity and permanently alter the character of the area. This would be contrary to environmental and sustainability priorities.
Pressure on Local Services Local services are already stretched, including schools, GP surgeries and wider NHS services such as ambulances and maternity facilities.
A development of this size would place further strain on infrastructure that is already struggling to meet current demand. It is unclear how these services would be expanded to accommodate the increase in population.
For these reasons, I strongly urge the planning authority to reject this proposal.
