I am extremely concerned about the proposed development of 250 houses along Cardiff Road. It would significantly increase pressure on our already overburdened healthcare services and worsen traffic congestion, which has been a longstanding issue. The additional 500 to 1000 residents would likely cause further flooding, pollution, and traffic queues, and reduce water absorption by the land, increasing flood risks. Our village has already absorbed many new residents, and I believe infrastructure improvements are necessary before approving such development. I urge the scheme to be abandoned.
We cannot tell you how worried we are about the proposed new development of farm land along Cardiff Road for 250 new houses.
Our concerns are as follows:
We are already suffering from recent house developments in Scholars Park and Cross Common road bringing several hundred new families into the area. Each family adding extra pressure to our already struggling doctors surgery and causing further congestion on the already traffic logged roads on the Cardiff road towards Penarth and the Pen y Turnpike towards Leckwith.
250 houses could easily mean a further 500 - 1000 people using the doctor's services. The current situation being that on a Monday one cannot get an appointment with the Doctor. You cannot even get through to a receptionist. Tuesday - Friday is not much better. Long waits on "hold" then the best a receptionist can offer is a phone call from the doctor - if you are very lucky.
How can adding a huge number of extra residents even be considered?
The back log of traffic through Dinas Powys has been a problem for many years. When I moved here in 1969 a by pass was being discussed. It is still occasionally mentioned. The traffic is horrendous at any time of day or evening. Given that each of the 250 homes can have 2 cars (as is the norm), how can any responsible council think that adding 500 cars to this transport system be in any way a good idea? The emission of car fumes is a serious health hazard now so how are you justifying making it so much worse?
We could talk more about the green belt between Dinas Powys and Penarth, the diminishing of the quality of life here in our village, the pressure on schools and other services but we will just confine ourselves to one more serious concern - the current fields absorb a lot of the rainfall in the village. Where will this water go to when you have concreted and paved over the area leaving just miniscule lawns and the odd flower bed to soak up the run off from the fields behind?
So our concerns are:
further flooding,
further pollution,
further stressful traffic queues,
and diminishing access to our doctor's surgery.
We implore you to abandon this scheme. Our village has absorbed large numbers of new residents (from new housing) in recent years so we feel that we have accommodated all we can until the infrastructure of the village is vastly improved.
