SF&G note that TAN 6 is outdated, requiring local authorities to update their local development plans with more current rural related policies. Wales faces challenges in self-sufficiency for fruit and vegetables, and the outdated TAN 6 hampers sustainable rural community development. We suggest the Vale of Glamorgan Council adopt planning guidance on Rural Enterprise Dwellings for horticulture, as Powys Council has, to support rural enterprise development. We are happy to collaborate on policy wording and approaches based on existing evidence to encourage sustainable rural growth.
Due to the outdated nature of TAN 6 it is incumbent on local authorities to include more up to date policy in their local development plans.

Social Farms & Gardens is very concerned that Technical Advice Note 6 – Planning for Sustainable Rural Communities is considerably out of date (July 2010) and no longer delivering sustainable rural communities. It therefore falls on local authorities delivering replacement local development plan, to consider the latest evidence, trends, previous decisions and other written approaches. The Practice Guidance on Rural Enterprise Dwellings, although only considered an exemplar approach, has the potential to be used too prescriptively and in a way that is out of line with the needs of our rural economy and communities, especially given the climate and nature emergencies that have been declared.
We ask the Vale of Glamorgan Council to consider adopting planning guidance on Rural Enterprise Dwellings for horticulture - like Powys Council have done. see here - https://en.powys.gov.uk/article/16407/Rural-Enterprise-Dwellings-for-Small-Scale-Horticulture. This guidance can be more or less copied from Powys version like Bannau Brynchieniog have done. Therefore it is important that the RLDP provides positive wording in policies to encourage development in association horticultural enterprises including rural enterprise dwellings. We have an abundance of of evidence to support this approach and would be keen to collaborate on any potential wording or approaches.
