We note that Policy SP5 mentions 'enabling access to a healthy food environment', which is positive. We suggest the explanatory text should clarify what this entails, referencing the SPG on healthy placemaking and outlining potential characteristics of such spaces. It should also discuss less capital-intensive ways to promote health and wellbeing, including food growing spaces, which could help address health inequalities. Additionally, incorporating affordable housing within allocated sites offers further opportunities to support a healthy, inclusive environment and mitigate health disparities.

Social Farms & Gardens are pleased to see Policy SP5 creating healthy and inclusive places and spaces mentions 'enabling opportunities for access to a healthy food environment'. It is certainly a step in the right direction. Perhaps the explanatory text could refer to what is meant by this. Certainly reference needs to be made to the SPG on healthy place making. With the lack of clarity, a developer may move onto to considering other ’methods’ of creating ‘a healthy and inclusive place’. The explanatory text needs to make further reference to the possibilities such a space could look like and what it might entail. There is much discussion in the text about health and wellbeing services but there are also much less, capital intensive, things that can be provided. How could to a healthy food environment contribute to the wider determinants of health? These should be suggested and discussed at pre application stage. Reference to health inequalities is welcomed – perhaps more emphasis on the potential of food growing spaces could be brought in here. The need for affordable housing as part of ‘allocated’ sites presents a further opportunity to achieve this.
